Soleá Morente y Los Evangelistas is a band formed in 2011 as a tribute to maestro Enrique Morente, who passed away the previous year.

Juan Ramón Rodríguez, ‘Jota’– member of the Spanish pop-band Los Planetas- and Antonio Arias –from Spanish band Lagartija Nick- asked singer Soleá Morente (daughter of Mr. Morente and bailaora Aurora Carbonell) to pay tribute to her father at a show at La Noche Blanca as part of Córdoba’s Festival Flamenco.

Thereafter, the new band went on tour, performing their versions of Enrique Morente’s repertoire. The enormous success of the shows led to the 2012 recording of ‘Homenaje a Morente’. In this recording, the band’s members pay homage to maestro Morente from a very personal perspective, showing their respect and admiration for the artist they consider their God, from which they derive their name, ‘The Evangelists’.

Two years after their first gig the band reunited to release a second album, ‘Encuentro’. This time, the young cantaora was not limited to the chorus and performed as the lead singer. With all the songs written by Jota and Arias, this record distances the band from its origin as a tribute band and shows an intention for breaking barriers and fusing styles, highlighting the savvy of Morente’s middle child for mixing flamenco with other forms of modern music.
