Homage to Gabriela the Bell, in its 500th anniversary

August 20 12:00 h

This year, the opening of the Flamenco on the Balconies Cycle has a very special goal: offer homage to Gabriela the Bell in its 500th anniversary.

The Bell was casted on July 18, 1519 and today it still keeps its installation. It was baptized with the name Archangel Gabriel, whose message about the Incarnation is completely engraved in Latin in its center. It is considered the most valuable and complex bell of the Santa María La Real complex.

On August 20, the Cathedral’s Music Chapel, an institution that has remained active since its inception in 1206, will perform the three Angelus invocations, which precisely make reference to Archangel Saint Gabriel in its Hail to Virgin Mary. Every plea of the Angelus, combined with the Gabriela Bell, will be sung in the three official languages of the liturgy of the Diocese of Pamplona: Latin, Spanish and Basque.

Immediately after, Gabriella will ring again by the hand of Josemi and Juan Carmona, opening the sixth edition of the Festival and leading way to the brave singer David de Jacoba and Rancapino Chico singing a martinete. This type of sound has its origins in the gypsy forges of Cadiz, Jerez and Seville and will fill the streets of the Pamplona capital in honor of Gabriela the Bell.

Flamenco overtakes the streets of the city, invading with art and music the most symbolic plazas and the most beautiful corners of Pamplona. Small recitals with traditional format will be offered in Calle la Mañueta, the City Council Plaza and the balconies of the Hotel la Perla of Plaza del Castillo in Pamplona from Wednesday August 21 through Sunday August 25.

Flamenco Jam

As a novelty of this sixth edition of the Festival, ‘El Bosquecillo’ will host, in an idyllic environment, the acclaimed ‘Jam Flamenca’.  This will open the evenings of the Festival from Thursday August 22 through Sunday, August 25, with the best of the atmospheres, starting at 14:30 h.

Generations, myths and promises

The oral transmission is the main learning tool for flamenco: from parents to children, teachers to students, one generation to the next one. The wisdom of the elderly and the maestros becomes available for the young who turn into heirs of magic and “duende”.

‘Generaciones, mitos y promesas’ (Generations, Myths and Promises) is themain theme for this new edition of Flamenco On Fire and it opens the doors to a series of free concerts that will take place at the ‘El Bosquecillo’, at Civivox Condestable and at Civican Fundación Caja Navarra. These shows will leave room for both young artists and great, renowned flamenco maestros, reminding us of the important oral transmission effect between generations and dynasties within this art. These shows are organized with the support of Fundación Caja Navarra and Obra Social La Caixa.

VI Jornadas de arte Flamenco

During the VI Jornadas sobre Arte Flamenco de Pamplona’ (Pamplona Flamenco Art Days) participants will be able to enjoy a Flash Mob, attend some master classes, workshops, documentaries, children’s activities, conferences, round tables, and flamenco experiences and cuisine. Flamenco experts, journalists, artists, historians and other cultural figures will be together during these exciting times. .

Designed to give value to Maestro Sabicas, particularly this year, these days will be focusing on the importance of the oral transmission within the flamenco generations, myths and promises through several activities organized by Flamenco On Fire with the support of the Federation of Roma Associations of Navarra Gaz Kaló, Fundación Caja Navarra, Caja Rural and Obra Social La Caixa.
