Ariadna Castellanos & Ed is Dead

27 august 21:00h Sala Zentral - Sala Zentral

In [MJU:ZIK] 2 different talents merge: Ariadna Castellanos & Ed Is Dead. The result is 12 unclassifiable and unique songs. Seldom do we find such rapport of two creative forces: Ariadna is the melody, the virtuosity; Ed is texture, rhythm and abstraction. One of the great figures in flamenco jazz together with an experienced and celebrated producer, a musician in balance between passion and mathematics.

Everything started with Ariadna’s curiosity: non-conformist and inquisitive, Ariadna was striving for different sounds and textures. She quite didn’t know what was missing. Until she listened to Ed at a gig. She found out she was missing the low tones, the depth, the power of simplicity of electronic music. Ariadna arrived at Ed’s studio with a handful of songs on piano: [MJU:ZIK] has nothing to do with that first moment. “The creative process has been long and intense- says Ed Is Dead- because we started off with some songs we needed to deconstruct. She comes from a classical and flamenco world, and I come from avant-garde electronic music, so we tried to bring down all barriers, to break free of styles, and to try to create something new out of emotion.”

Ariadna tells how “the message in [MJU:ZIK] is, in short, that when you think of it, even the simplest has a great deal of complexity. In my search out of classical music, which is music with a lot of information, I found electronic music. All of a sudden I found out I had almost nothing. And it made me feel passionate. To match my compositions with electronic patterns wasn’t easy, but the range of possibilities you can find in electronic music is infinite.”

In [MJU:ZIK] we can find brilliant collaborations from other artists of very different genres and musical origins. Zara McFarlane is the voice on the single “Alpha Woman”. Zara is one of the most recognized singers in British jazz, a winner of a Mobo Award in 2014 and Best Jazz Artist at the Urban Music Awards 2016. Nach, is a laureate rapper from Alicante (Spain) who’s very popular both in and out of the hip-hop scene. His album “Viajes Inmóviles” (“Still Journeys”) reached #1 on the sales charts. La Tremendita who, as her artistic name suggests, is a flamenco force to be reckoned with: no label would publish her work, so she did so on her own and conquered a Grammy Award. Odille Lima is the voice on “Walking On Sand”. She is one of the most applauded and successful singers on dance floors, moving from Electronic, to Nu Soul, to pop… Odille has an inborn talent for creating melodies on top of any music.

About Ariadna Castellanos

Ariadna’s relationship with piano is unique and her talent has been rewarded with scholarships in the most prestigious international music institutions like Berklee Music School in Boston or the Guildhall School in London. She has been the only Spanish artist to be granted a Presidential Scholarship at Berklee. Both jazz and flamenco are part of her musical freedom both as a perfomer and as a composer. In her return to Spain she has collaborated with Pepe de Lucía, Jorge Pardo, Agustín Carbonell “El Bola” or Niño Josele, and she has performed on stage with Paco de Lucia, Michel Camilo, Herbie Hancock and Richard Bona.

Vanity Fair US said about her “she is one of the most interesting talents in New Jazz”.

She was nominated to the Latin Grammy’s with her first album “Flamenco en Black & White”.
